Bhubaneswar (TF Bureau): A seven-day mourning is being observed in Odisha from today after the demise of former president Pranab Mukherjee.
“On account of sad demise of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee on 31st August, 2020, it has been decided that as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, 7 days State mourning will be observed from 31st August to 6th September,” a Home Department notification said.
The national flag will be flown at half mast on all buildings throughout the state where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment, it added.
Earlier in the day, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of the departed leader.
Describing him as an illustrious son of India, the Chief Minister said that late Mukherjee had vast knowledge on all most all the issues and was insightful, prudent and balanced in all his approach to life.
He had a distinguished political career and was respected and loved by all sections of society for his judicious decisions and unparalleled experience in governance. He will always be remembered for his exceptional ability to forge consensus on National issues. His demise brings an end to a glorious life, the Chief Minister added.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his deep sympathies to the bereaved family.
The 84-year-old died at a Army Hospital where he was admitted for a clot in the brain. However, his condition did not improve despite best efforts of the doctors.
