Software professional falls prey to online liquor delivery fraud in Odisha
Bhubaneswar (TF Bureau): Be ware! Cyber criminals are on the prowl. In less than a week’s time, one more person has been defrauded by cooks in the name of online liquor delivery here.
It seems the criminals outsmarted the victim as he is a software professional working in a reputed firm in the city.
The youth, a resident of Chandrasekharpur area here, has been duped of around Rs 80,000 after he ordered liquor online through social-networking site Facebook.
The victim claimed that he had come across an advertisement on Facebook providing online orders for home delivery of liquor from an outlet named ‘Kadambari’.
When contacted, the fraudster shared a PhonePe number and asked him to make a payment of Rs 980.
“When the order got delayed, I called on that number to enquire about it. The person on the other side of the phone asked me to complete registration process so as to complete the order. He then sent a barcode to scan it. When I scanned the code four times on PhonePe, a sum of Rs 79,181 was debited from my SBI and Standard Chartered Bank accounts,” the complainant narrated.
While revealing further detail, the duped man said, “The name of the PhonePe number was Narendra Singh. But after few follow-ups, I received a refund of Rs 3,000 from one Prathamesh Mestry.”
The victim later approached the Chandrasekharpur police station to lodge an FIR. However, the cops refused to register the complaint saying it to be a case of cyber crime.
